Why Manage your own super?

There are numerous benefits to setting up a Self Managed Super Fund (SMSF).

  • Greater control over your investments
  • More choice in what you invest in, meaning you can diversify your portfolio and potentially achieve higher returns
  • Invest in property through your SMSF
  • Potentially lower fees compared to other managed commercial funds
  • Tax benefits
  • Additional benefits unique to small business owners.

Despite the clear advantages of SMSFs, they’re not for everyone.

Whilst the usual superannuation rules apply to SMSFs there are a few additional rules that apply. The name may suggest it’s DIY, but engaging professionals to take care of most of your responsibilities, paperwork and compliance issues is common. That’s where we come in.

We can help you decide if Self Managed Super is right for you, then administer and manage your SMSF including maintaining accounting and member records and preparing annual pension fund paperwork.

Common questions about SMSF

An SMSF, or self-managed superannuation fund, is a type of retirement savings account in Australia that is managed by the members themselves. SMSFs have a maximum of four members and are regulated by the Australian Taxation Office (ATO).

Anyone who is over 18 years of age and has not been declared bankrupt can set up an SMSF. However, it is important to note that managing an SMSF can be complex and time-consuming, so it is recommended that individuals seek professional advice before setting up an SMSF.

To set up a Self-Managed Super Fund, you’ll need to establish a trust and a trustee company or individual trustees. You will also need to register the fund with the Australian Taxation Office, develop an investment strategy, and open a bank account for the fund.
